My upcoming annual Scotland Visit in the Wake of the Current Climate of Widespread and Extreme Hatred Against Jews
This week in Australia, on the eve of the festival of Chanukah (14th December), we saw one of the most heinous Muslim terrorist attacks upon Jews since the Yom Kippur (2nd October) attack in Manchester this year and of course, Hamas’ massacre of over 1,200 Israelis and others - a real genocide, on Simchas Torah (7th October) in 2023.
This didn’t happen in a vacuum and has everything to do with incitement to hatred and violence directed at Jews coming from the Muslim and Arab world, Islamists within the rapidly growing local Muslim communities, the activist radical Socialists and Greens, and the almost never reported tens of billions (yes, billions) of pounds, euros and dollars being "invested" into Western governments, Western medias, city projects, corporate businesses and universities by terrorist supporting countries such as Qatar, Iran and Turkey.
Screams of “Globalise the Intifada”, “From the River to the Sea” and “Jihad” are not just empty slogans. As we saw on Bondi Beach on Sunday, they mean what they say, yet the police stand by and do nothing in the face of this blatant Jew hatred.
Moreover, much of the population of the Western world including their governments have already been brainwashed by the universities and schools and the Main Stream Media like the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, CNN, Sky News UK, The Guardian, The New York Times, etc., who are pumping out on a daily basis, totally false accusations, pure lies that amount to blood libels of so-called genocide and forced starvation in Gaza, demonising Israel, the only Jewish state in the world and the only democracy in the Middle East, as well as the Jewish communities outside Israel, all without any consequences.
Praise is due to Sky News Australia, Talk TV and GB News for pushing back against the rest of the Anti-Semitic media mob (at least most of the time), and reporting the truth (more or less).
Jewish communities around the world are battening down the hatches and keeping their heads down, waiting for the next blow to hit.
Many in the UK, North America, Europe and Australasia are actively planning their aliya. We welcome you all!
In the midst of all this, I am planning a family trip to Scotland early next year with my adult sons, to visit some of my favourite distilleries and to refresh my whisky knowledge.
With my large black Kippa on my head and long white Tzitzis dangling down, you can appreciate that when I travel around Scotland, I am very visibly an Orthodox Jew. British Jews have advised me to wear a hat in order to cover my kippa and to tuck my Tzitzis in. However, I find wearing hats uncomfortable (unless it’s bitterly cold), and as my late Rav, Rabbi Goldberg zt”l, used to say, “you don’t shove a mitzva down your trousers”. So, even in the current climate, I won’t be hiding my Judaism!
Up until now, I have always been received very warmly by the locals I meet in the street, self catering chalets and cottages and in the distilleries in Scotland. But now, in today’s hostile climate, for the first time in more than 30 years of visiting Scotland, I am, I have to admit, feeling slightly apprehensive over what we may encounter in Bonny Scotland. Be’ezras Hashem everyone we meet will be as warm and friendly as I have known the Scots to be in the past.
I wish all of you a Chanukah Sameach.
I’d like to hear from everyone but particularly from any Scots reading this, Jewish and non-Jewish who could describe their experiences. I'd prefer that you use the Comments section below rather than contacting me on Whatsapp or email, so that we can share your thoughts with other readers.

I'm not Scottish so I can't speak for them. I am Welsh but I don't speak on behalf of the Welsh either. I speak on behalf of me and you my friend. You are, as you say, very obviously an Orthodox Jew in appearance and all that you believe. You should not hide that fact under any circumstance in the civilised world. I don't believe you have in the past and neither should you today.
ReplyDeleteI'm not so daft to believe that there aren't small pockets of the U.K where to walk the streets as an Orthodox Jew could attract hostile intent but those places are very much in the minority. I'm not going to get into the mainstream media but I do agree that Judaism is in a harsh place right now and we have witnessed terrible assaults on Jewish people across the world which I hoped never to see in my lifetime. Obviously, the politics of Israel is an intrinsic part of the warped belief system for those that commit these terrible crimes.
Going back to your trip to Scotland. I'm very confident that you can conduct yourself in the way you always have Mordechai. Just be yourself and I'm sure you will enjoy a warm welcome as always. I understand why some might want to hunker down but they are not people like us. I honestly believe you will have a great time.
God Bless You.

Mordechai Kol Hakavod for carrying on your life as normal in these very troubled times. Do you think for one moment that the Chareidim in Stamford Hill are going to change into jeans and T-shirts so of course without putting oneself into danger you should continue to go about as before. I would however give Birmingham a miss if you had any intention of straying that way as the West Midlands Police are controlled by the Islamists and like them they lie and hate Jews and will not arrest people calling to globalise the intifada. But I digress PG we look forward to receiving your erudite report on the state of the grain in Scotland and your encounters with the gentle folk of the Highlands and Lowlands. Chanukah Sameach and Chodesh Tov
ReplyDeleteLet the debate begin. I happen to live in Birmingham Norman so I have some personal insight. I don't entirely disagree with your assessment of the city but it it's not particularly nuanced. It's a big city for a start with many voting districts which were once villages in their own right. They have been gobbled up by the metropolis but Orthodox Jews, dressed as such, can walk in these areas without any fear whatsoever. Time to disclose that I am not Jewish so I speak theoretically but I truly believe that many parts of the city would be happy to welcome a guy like Mordechai. Sadly there are other parts of the city where it would be difficult.
DeleteI'll come back to the whisky shortly but I have to challenge, or at least ask you, why you believe West Midlands Police are controlled by Islamists? I personally know some people on the police force in Birmingham and I can tell you they are emphatically not controlled by Islamists. The city is a melting pot and all minorities feel vulnerable in their own way. I have to agree with you that Orthodox Judaism is very vulnerable in some parts of the city. I live in one such area but the Muslim hostility, which does not come from all Muslims, is also watered down by the multitude of other people in my area which includes the greatest Sikh community outside of India. It's the most ethnically diverse patch in the U.K. They're not all thinking about Israel and Judaism.
Final word about the 'gentle folk of the Highlands and Lowlands.' Norman, have you been reading some old time books about Scotland? Birmingham's rough when people exclude the massive middle class (always written out of the story) but you seem to have applied that principle in opposite. However, we agree that our good pal should enjoy his stay without any worry and I'm sure he will. I'm actually hoping to meet up with at some point so I better be right. I'm certain, as I said in my post, that he will be welcomed and should not worry.
Peace be with you. I think we can meet half way. WT
